Edward Tufte is the author and publisher of an influential series of books about information design. When Tufte set out to produce The Visual Design of Quantitative Information, publishers told him that they couldn’t provide the quality of printing, paper and color reproduction that he demanded because it would make the retail cost of his book too high. So Tufte decided to publish the book himself. He created his own company, Graphics Press, and took out a mortgage on his house to finance it. By publishing the book himself he was able to keep the price accessible and maintain control over every aspect of the book’s design and production.
